One of four distinct national regions within the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland is fast becoming one of the most visited by international tourists hoping to experience Irish hospitality and the wonderful scenery that the northern region has to offer.  The capital, Belfast, and the historical centre of Londonderry (Derry), are among the most visited areas, with Armagh (the ecclesiastical capital), Coleraine and Enniskillen proving strong regional favourites.  The UNESCO World Heritage Listed Giant's Causeway, situated on the North Coast, Rathlin Island and the Mourne Mountains are also well worth visiting.

Being as it is closely connected both politically and geographically to the rest of the United Kingdom, it should come as little surprise that Northern Ireland is easy to get to from Wales, Scotland and England and indeed from further afield.  The region has three large airports, George Best Belfast City, Belfast International, and City of Derry, as well as major ferry connections to Scotland and the Isle of Man.  The Republic of Ireland to the south also has an extensive ferry network to England and Wales.  The airports, of which Belfast International is the busiest, are visited by airlines such as easyJet, Jet2.com, FlyBe, Aer Lingus and Ryanair flying routes from all over the UK and Europe.

Car hire is recommended for exploring Northern Ireland, particularly as the rail connections are not as extensive as desired.  Europcar, Avis, Hertz, Budget and National are located at the major airports, the ferry ports and in the large urban areas.
